If you are an expert in blowing smoke rings, you can advance to the next level of the smoking art. While blowing a heart-shaped smoke ring is a minor variation of the traditional smoke ring, you may need extensive training before your desired results will be achieved. This trick can be used to impress friends but will require a lot of practice. It requires precise mouth and tongue movements and shapes. Practice by yourself until you are confident you can perform the trick in public. This will also require a calm indoor setting to perform, because any wind or air movement will prevent the heart shape from forming.
There are several methods to blow heart-shaped rings, and we will present them in the brief tutorial below.
1. Puff on the cigarette until you have a mouthful of smoke. Close your mouth and lips. Pull the back of your tongue as far back into your throat as possible. The tip of your tongue will now be about half an inch away from your teeth.
2. Slowly open your mouth, jaw and lips to form an "O" shape at the lips. Lift the center of your bottom lip up higher than the sides of your bottom lip. Adjust your top lip to create a triangle shape with right and left sides at a 45-degree angle and the center of your top lip forming a point. This requires a lot of lip dexterity and flexibility. Note that some people find this totally impossible to hold properly the middle of the bottom lip upwards with no assistance. If that is a case for you, you can try using one of your fingers to press your bottom lip in the described position.
3. Curl the top of your tongue so it is touching the bottom of your mouth and the center of your tongue is almost touching the roof of your mouth. Slide your tongue forward with the tip sliding against the bottom of your mouth. The air from your mouth will be gently pushed out and force the smoke through your heart-shaped lips, forming the heart-shaped smoke ring.
The small variation of the standard method includes holding the middle of your top lip downwards (instead of holding your middle of your bottom lip) for the similar effect, except your heart shaped smoke rings will be upside-down.

To apply the technique, you need to be able to blow consistently thick smoke rings, while there should not be even a minimal air movement in the room. After you blow a ring, snap your fingers exactly above the ring. By that, you are trying to make a minor air disturbance to the desired direction. The little wind above the ring should push a top part of the “O” ring slightly down. The trick is quite complicated, and you should expect that it will not work each time you try.
This approach also requires from you to get a steady professionally performed smoke rings. Take a strong puff of tobacco, drawing a lot of smoke. After you remove the hose from your mouth, stick a toothpick between your two front teeth, so that it can stand on its own. Use standard smoke ring procedure and the toothpick should cause an indentation in the top of the ring, giving it the appearance of a rounded heart.
